In a significant political development, President Sahabuddin announced the dissolution of the national parliament. This decision was communicated through a circular from the President's Press Wing on Tuesday afternoon, August 6.
According to the notice, the dissolution followed the consensus reached among three army chiefs, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society, and leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement with President Sahabuddin.
The circular also stated that BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been released from detention. The anti-discrimination movement, which began on July 1 and continued until August 5, demanded the release of detainees in various cases, resulting in the release of many individuals.
The anti-discrimination student movement had earlier issued an ultimatum demanding the dissolution of parliament by 3 PM. In a video message, movement coordinator Nahid Islam accused the parliament led by Sheikh Hasina of being fascist and threatened to announce stricter measures if the parliament was not dissolved by the deadline. "I call upon the revolutionary students to be ready," Nahid Islam urged.
On Monday, August 5, at 2:30 PM, Sheikh Hasina, accompanied by her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, departed from Bangabhaban in a military helicopter. According to AFP reports, both sisters have moved to a safe location. Sheikh Hasina had intended to record a speech before her departure but was unable to do so.
