Mortar shell fired from Myanmar lands near Bandarban home

A mortar shell, reportedly fired from Myanmar amid tension at border, landed across the border in Bandarban's Ghumdhum union and hit the window of a house Tuesday morning.

Confirming the incident, Ghumdhum Union Parishad Chairman AKM Jahangir Aziz said: “From 6am on Tuesday, gunshots were heard in the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) Battalion Camp-2 area near the Ghumdhum border.”

“Around 9am, a mortal shell suddenly hit a tree in the boundary of Syed Noor Sikder and former Lt. Naik Dr Nurul Islam behind Ghumdhum High School and hit one side of Syed Noor Sikder's residence. However, there were no casualties,” he added.

Locals expressed fear as the firing intensified.

At least two people were killed and a child was injured after a mortar shell, reportedly fired by Myanmar, fell on the Ghumdum border in Bandarban on Monday.

The incident took place at around 2:30pm when the shell hit an under-construction house in the Naikhongchhari upazila.
