Blamed a classmate for sexually harassing her
A Jagannath University (JnU) student was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room in Comilla on Friday night.
The deceased, Fairuz Abontika, was a student of the 13th batch of the university's law department.
Her body was found at around 10pm at her parent’s house in Bagichagaon area of the district.
Kotwali Model police station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Hossain told the media that the body was kept at Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue.
Abontika’s friends and fellow students said she died after posting a status on Facebook, where she blamed a classmate for sexually harassing her.
They also said that an assistant proctor of the university had verbally abused Abontika when she complained about that classmate to him.
After knowing about Abontika’s death, JnU students gathered in front of the campus and demonstrated.
Meanwhile, the university administration has suspended the student who Abontika had blamed on her Facebook status. The assistant proctor was also relieved of his duty.
In this regard, Jagannath University Proctor Prof Dr Jahangir Hossain said: “We have learned about the matter. The student accused one of our Proctoral Team members as responsible for her death. The vice chancellor has given an order to suspend him temporarily. Further action will be taken subject to investigation in the legal process.”
A probe body was also formed to investigate the matter.
