JU VC greets Saima Wazed on her candidacy for WHO regional director post

If Saima Wazed elected, she envisions strengthening the ability of the member state
Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam has greeted Saima Wazed as she is contesting for the post of regional director of World Health Organization's (WHO) South-East Asia Region (SEARO).
In a message, the vice-chancellor said: “We are very much proud of Saima Wazed, an official candidate of Bangladesh for the post of regional director of WHO-SEARO. Currently she is very much capable of playing a prominent role as a global public health diplomat. Her responsibilities will not only address challenges in the health sectors of the 11 member states, but also help to work together to enable the implementation of equitable healthcare which is innovative and profound in local knowledge.”
The initiative dialogue with the member states will be significant on expanding the number of flagship projects, said JU VC.
Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam mentioned that Saima Wazed graduated from Barry University, USA in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology in 2002. In 2004, she obtained a professional degree in the School of Psychology. While studying at Barry University, she conducted research on women empowerment in Bangladesh. Her research work on this subject was recognized as the best scientific presentation by the Florida Academy of Sciences.
Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam reiterated that Saima Wazed has been studying Doctoral studies at Barry University, USA on Organizational Leadership. It is noted that, Saima Wazed has been an advisor to the Director General of WHO on Mental Health and Autism since 2019, and also a member of WHO's Expert Advisory Panel on Mental Health since 2014.
In August 2023, she was appointed as an associate fellow at the Global Health Program at Chatham House, where she has also been serving as a commissioner at the Commission for Universal Health since 2022, he added.
Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam mentioned that Saima Wazed has been working as Thematic Ambassador for Vulnerability for the Climate Vulnerable Forum since 2020. In addition she was working as WHO SEARO's Goodwill Ambassador for Autism.
The vice-chancellor believes that if Saima Wazed is elected, she envisions strengthening the ability of the member states and WHO to address health gaps in the context of challenging issues and way forward ensuring that marginalized and vulnerable groups are not further disenfranchised.
