Landslide occurred after heavy rain

A man and his pregnant wife were killed in their sleep when a landslide buried their home in the Badshaghona area of Cox's Bazar early on Friday.

The deceased were Anwar Hossain, 26, and his wife Maimuna Akter, 20. Maimuna was five months pregnant according to relatives.

Quoting family members of the deceased, local municipal councillor Helal Uddin said it had been raining intermittently in Cox's Bazar since midnight and there was heavy rainfall at around 3am.

Anwar had gone to bed with his wife after dinner, Helal said, adding that at around 3:30am, a large chunk of earth fell on their home from the slope of the hill.

“Both husband and wife were buried under the soil and died."

Afterwards, locals, alerted by the cries of one family member, rushed in and rescued the two from under the soil, Helal said.

They were taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Helal Uddin added that the bodies were currently at the hospital morgue.
