‘If ACC decides to proceed, a case will be filed’

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan has revealed that evidence has been found against former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members for acquiring wealth beyond their known income.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Khurshid Alam said: "Evidence of Benazir Ahmed's corruption has been found. If the commission decides to proceed, a case will be filed."

On May 23, the court ordered the seizure of 83 properties and 33 bank accounts belonging to Benazir Ahmed.

Later, on May 26, the court mandated the seizure of 119 land deeds, 23 company shares, and four flats in Gulshan, all in the names of Benazir and his family members.

The ACC began investigating allegations of illegal wealth acquisition against Benazir, his wife, and their two daughters, on April 22.

A three-member special investigation team, led by ACC Head Office Deputy Director Hafizul Islam, is conducting the investigation.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir commented on Wednesday: "The commission is continuing to investigate the assets of Benazir's family. The court has ordered the seizure of the assets discovered so far."

Benazir Ahmed served as IGP from April 2020 to September 2022, and prior to that, he was the director general of RAB from January 2015 to April 2020.

He also held the position of commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for an extended period.
