Police always provided security at BNP headquarters
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has said that the police did not seal the BNP office in Naya Paltan, rather it was the work of the party.
He said this while talking to reporters after visiting the patients injured in the blockade programs at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute and Plastic Surgery on Tuesday morning.
The DMP commissioner said police always provided security at the BNP headquarters all year round.
"They locked it [BNP office] and didn’t go there. We have no objection if they open their offices … We never had any," he added.
"Attempts were made to brutally burn people to death during the blockade program," the police official said.
“A transport worker named Nayeem was burnt to death while he was sleeping. Many of the injured are battling for their lives. We thought of providing financial assistance to the transport workers who are undergoing treatment here,” he added.
The DMP commissioner said procedures are underway to take legal action against those who committed atrocities.
“We have already arrested 13 people while they were trying to commit arson. Besides, 19 people have been arrested in this connection.”
Regarding the stabbing of an assistant sub-inspector of police in Khilkhet on Monday, he said, "It is not related to the political movement. A case has been registered in this regard. An investigation is underway.
