BNP leaders among 11 arrested in Jamalpur

10 people were injured


Law enforcers have arrested 11 people, including a leader of Jamalpur district unit BNP, in a case filed over setting fire to three coaches of intercity “Jamuna Express” train near Sarishabari railway station in Jamalpur. 

Md Abdul Quader, sub inspector and in charge at Sarishabari railway police outpost, had filed the case naming 40 people on Sunday night.

40 others unidentified persons have also been sued in the case.

Those arrested include BNP leader Liakat Ali, Munser Ali, Babu Mia, Ramjan Ali, Rezaul Karim, Nazrul Islam, Sujon Mia, Raja Mia, Ashik Mia, Morad Hasan and Mosharraf Hossain. They were arrested during raids conducted in Sarishabari Upazila, confirmed Gulzar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC), of Jamalpur Railway Police Station.

They were produced before a Jamalpur court yesterday afternoon and the court sent the arrestees to jail, the OC added. 

The other accused in the case include Faridul Kabir Talukder Shamim, president of district BNP, Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun, secretary general of district BNP and Shahidul Haque Khan Dulal, senior joint secretary general of the party. 

Earlier on Sunday morning, Abdus Salam, assistant station master of the railway station, had filed a case with Jamalpur Railway Police Station over the incident.  

At least ten people including four women were injured as miscreants set fire to two compartments of the “Jamuna Express” train, which was parked at Jamalpur's Sarishabari railway station early Sunday, hours before a 24-hour nationwide hartal called by the BNP began.

The injured were admitted to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex.
