BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that while the BNP is not directly involved in the quota reform movement, they support it morally, considering it a reasonable cause. He made these remarks to journalists after attending a Ghaibana Janaza at Baitul Mukarram Mosque on Wednesday afternoon.
Fakhrul compared the current government's actions to those of the ruling group during the Pakistan period, accusing them of attempting to suppress the movement. “During the Pakistan period, the ruling group tried to suppress the movement like this but they could not suppress that movement. The same way the government is trying today. I do not agree with him at all. Not only disagree, I condemn, hate, protest this decision,” he stated.
Condemning the closure of educational institutions, including universities, Fakhrul emphasized that peaceful resolution is possible. “It is possible to solve the problem peacefully by opening all halls and educational institutions including Dhaka University. It could have been done by the government if it wanted to, but it seems they don't have that will.”
Expressing his shock over the recent violent incidents, Fakhrul said, “I have never seen such a terrible incident in my life. Six students lost their lives. How a student Saeed was shot dead in Rangpur. This kind of suppression policy, this kind of torture, this kind of murder-disappearance, the government remains in power today by force.”
He also condemned the police raid on BNP's central office, alleging that there was an attempt to falsely implicate the BNP. “Condemning the police raid on BNP's central office, Fakhrul said that there is an attempt to blame BNP again by leaving cocktail bombs and sticks in the BNP office and taking photos there.”
