Students at Dhaka University held a protest on Friday in solidarity with ongoing demonstrations in Kolkata, where a doctor was brutally raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College.
The protest, organized under the banner "Awaaz Tolo Nari" (Raise Your Voice, Women), took place at the Raju Sculpture, Dhaka University.
On August 9, a 31-year-old doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, her bloodied body left behind in a horrific scene.
The incident has led to protests across India, demanding justice for the victim.
The students demanded justice for the victim, criticizing both the destruction of evidence in Kolkata and the lack of justice in similar cases in Bangladesh.
They highlighted the irony of discussing India's judicial independence while Bangladesh struggles with its own issues of police and judicial accountability.
Referring to the infamous Tonu rape case in the Comilla Cantonment area, Aleya Tahmim, an Anthropology student said: "In a place where one-fourth of the country's army is stationed, how can such an incident occur? If the military refuses to take responsibility, claiming ignorance, there can be no greater irony.
Protesters displayed placards with slogans such as "Kolkata to Bangladesh, We Want Justice" and "The Only Punishment for Rapists is the Death Penalty."
They called for an end to impunity for rapists and stronger legal protections for women.
