Massive Floods in Assam: 6 Lakh People Trapped in Water Across 19 Districts

Monsoon rains have triggered catastrophic flooding across Assam, India. As of Tuesday, 19 districts are inundated, leaving at least 644,128 people stranded in floodwaters.
- Affected Districts: Kamrup, Golaghat, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Cachar, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Udalguri, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Shivasagar, Darang, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Viswanath, Jorhat
- Rivers in Danger Zone: Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Dikhou, Disang, Buridihing, Jia-Bhoroli, Beki, Kushiyara
Rescue Efforts Underway
- Assam State Disaster Management Agency (ASDMA) is coordinating relief operations.
- 72 relief camps set up, housing over 8,000 evacuees.
- Army, Air Force, paramilitary forces, NDRF, SDRF, and local administration involved in rescue missions.
- Air Force helicopters rescued 9 people in Dhemaji district.
- Over 1,200 people rescued in Tinsukia district by army and paramilitary personnel.
Death Toll Rises
- At least 1 person killed in current floods, another missing.
- Since January 2024, floods, storms, and landslides have claimed 45 lives in Assam.
Lakhimpur Worst Hit
- Lakhimpur district suffers the most severe flooding, with over 144,000 people affected.
- Dhemaji and Cachar districts follow closely with over 100,000 people impacted each.
Central Government Pledges Support
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed of the situation via phone calls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
- The central government has assured full assistance and cooperation to Assam.
