Adds that Tarique lacks courage to return to Bangladesh
Awami League General Secretary on Tuesday said the people of Bangladesh would resist those who opposed the upcoming election and vote Sheikh Hasina into power for a fifth time.
Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a rally near the Institution of Engineers, before the Awami League’s march to mark Victory Day.
The minister said BNP leaders gave speeches from behind the scenes and held marches with only 10-12 people in fog. “Is this their movement? The BNP does not have a leader. With whom will they hold protests? Who will contest the election for them?”
About statements by BNP leaders that 20,000 of their men were in jail, Quader said he had inquired about it, and the actual number was 11,000. Around 2,000 BNP leaders and activists had secured bail, he added.
The Awami League leader said Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the BNP, did not have the courage to return to the country from London. “[If he had]... he would have been on the streets, gone to prison.”
