Court grants 7 days to question him in custody

The name of Jhenaidah Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu came up in connection with the murder of MP Md Anwarul Azim Anar in the confessional statement of Shimul Bhuiyan, one of the key suspects in the killing, according to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The investigating officer of the case, DB Assistant Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman, presented Babu in court and applied for a 10-day remand on Sunday, mentioning the aforementioned information in the application.

The officer in the application noted that Shimul Bhuiyan alias Shihab alias Fazal Mohammad Bhuiyan alias Amanullah Sayeed and accused Tanvir Bhuiyan as well as Shilasti Rahman had given confessional statements in court.

In his confessional statement, Shimul mentioned Babu in connection with the murder and revealed some plans between him and Babu.

Shimul also said he returned to Bangladesh from Kolkata on May 15 and contacted Babu on WhatsApp on May 16, before meeting him on the next day.

The investigating officer further said detectives conducted a raid at Shimul Bhuiyan's rented home Savar on Saturday to recover evidence. Upon reviewing the data from a mobile phone found there, they discovered WhatsApp conversations between Shimul and Babu from May 16.

Notably, detectives had detained Babu at his home in Jhenaidah’s Adarshaparha area on Thursday night.

According to the application, Babu during initial questioning admitted to being in contact with Shimul Bhuiyan. He said that at around 10:30pm on May 16, he spoke with Shimul on WhatsApp regarding the abduction of the lawmaker. The following day, Babu and Shimul met inside a car beside the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway in Bhanga, Faridpur. During this secret meeting, they discussed the abduction and subsequent murder of MP, as well as the exchange of money and related matters.

The officer said Babu was giving conflicting statements when asked if others were involved in the plan.

He said in the application that to uncover the main mystery, determine whether anyone else was involved in Shimul Bhuiyan and Babu's plan, and identify, arrest and gather information about unknown conspirators, he was seeking to question Babu in custody.

After the hearing, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mehedi Hasan placed him on a seven-day remand.
