GM Quader: Country’s economy dwindling

Prices of essential goods constantly increasing

Opposition Leader in Parliament GM Quader on Thursday said the economic condition of the country is currently very poor and the prices of essential goods are constantly increasing.

According to GM Quader, no system is effective in stopping this rise in prices.

He was speaking to reporters after offering prayers at the grave of his brother and party founder, General HM Ershad, in Rangpur. The newly elected members of parliament, including General Secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu, were present.

Both Quader and Chunnu were relieved from their posts by the party's Chief Patron Raushan Ershad last week.

GM Quader said the income of common people is decreasing every day. Under such circumstances, the price of commodities is going beyond the reach of the people. The government will be in trouble if it cannot prevent this from continuing, he warned.

Terming the January 7 election questionable, he said: “Since I participated in the election, I have been saying that there were irregularities in the election. I have repeatedly told the government what I said on the day of the election.”

He said political unrest may not be visible at the moment, but there is unrest within the country. Naturally, it is understandable that the economic condition of the country is in a very poor state.

He said, on the first day of 12th parliament, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said some unnecessary and irrelevant things inside the House. This has generated some dissatisfaction among the JaPa leaders.

“We have conveyed to the Speaker what we expect in carrying out our duties as an opposition party. I have argued for everything I have said,” he added.

Earlier in the day, GM Quader and Chunnu landed at Syedpur airport and came directly to visit Ershad's grave in the Darshan area of the city. Hundreds of party leaders and workers welcomed the top leaders of the party in Rangpur.

GM Quader was elected MP from Rangpur-3 constituency in the January 7 elections, while ten other party men secured their victories.

On January 28, the party appointed him the leader of the opposition party in parliament.

On the same day, Raushan Ershad declared herself the chairman of the party, removing the current party chief and secretary general from their posts.

Two days later, a legal notice sought cancellation of the notification that recognized Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader as the leader of the parliament.

Besides, the notice also sought the cancellation of the post of JaPa Co-Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud as the deputy leader.
