‘We know how to deal with criminals’

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said they have the capacity to thwart any kind of sabotage centering the 12th parliamentary election, scheduled for January 7.

"We are urging the people of all the 300 constituencies to come to the polling centres and cast their votes in a festive atmosphere," he said while exchanging views with journalists at the Police Officers' Mess in Rangpur on Monday.

He added that if anyone prevents any voter from voting, strict action will be taken against them. “And we know how to deal with these criminals. That's how all our policemen were instructed.”

The IGP said adequate security measures have been taken at the polling centers across Bangladesh. “Strict action will be taken against people who violate the law.”

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that half of the 2,146 polling centres in the capital are risky.

“Security measures have been arranged considering half of the centers in Dhaka city risky. There are also many remote centres within the city, where people have to use trawlers. Viewing all these, we think our security system is strong,” he added.

He said this while talking to reporters after a book festival at Rajarbagh Police Lines School and College on Monday.
