He made these remarks during his opening speech at a meeting with leaders of the Ganosamhati Andolon, held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament on Sunday (April 27).
Professor Ali Riaz said, "Through the united efforts of the people, the fascist regime has been forced to step down. We must carry forward this spirit of unity. It is not just our commitment; it is our responsibility."
Speaking about the Reform Commission’s recommendations, he noted that they are an attempt to address Bangladesh’s long-standing accumulated crises. However, he stressed that merely implementing the commission's recommendations would not be sufficient; building a democratic state structure, practicing democracy, and uniting democratic forces are also essential.
Referring to progress made through dialogues, Professor Riaz said, "We have achieved some progress, however small. If we fail to maintain and expand it, the opportunity will slip away. Everyone must work together to ensure that does not happen. Our efforts are not only for ourselves but for building a democratic and accountable state for future generations and the future of Bangladesh."
He also mentioned that if all stakeholders reach a consensus, the national charter could be finalized quickly.
At the meeting, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon Zonayed Saki said, "The points agreed upon by stakeholders will be adopted as the July Charter. For the unresolved issues, we must take them to the people. Bangladesh will move forward on the path of democratic transformation through consensus."
He further remarked, "Those who sought to cling to power for extended periods have used the state machinery for their own benefit. Sheikh Hasina exploited the state apparatus, leading to the current situation."
The meeting, moderated by the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider, was also attended by Commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr. Iftekharuzzaman.
