The apex court also scrapped the HC verdict in the case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the judgement following an appeal filed by Mamun challenging the HC verdict, Advocate Maksud Ullah, a lawyer for Tarique Rahman, told.

The bench on March 4 fixed today for delivering the verdict after concluding hearing on the appeal.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case in October 2009 with Cantonment Police Station against Tarique and Mamun on charge of laundering TK 20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007. The charges were pressed in July 2010 and the trial began in September 2011.

In 2013, the lower court concerned acquitted Tarique from the case and but jailed Mamun for seven years and fined him Tk 40 crore.

Following an appeal filed by the ACC, the HC on July 21, 2016, sentenced Tarique to seven years' imprisonment and fined him Tk 20 crore and also upheld the trial court judgement that convicted and sentenced Mamun to seven years' imprisonment and fined him Tk 40 crore in the same case.

On December 1 last year, the HC has acquitted Tarique from the two cases over August 21 grenade attack and the Appellate Division on January 15 this year acquitted him from Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

Tarique was arrested in an anti-corruption crackdown in 2007 and was released on bail on September 3 the following year. He flew to the UK on September 11 for treatment and has been staying in London since then.

Mamun got released from jail on August 6 last year, his lawyer Advocate Sabbir Hamza Choudhury told.

He said the Appellate Division on December 10 last year allowed his client Mamun to move an appeal before this court against the HC verdict.

Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain accompanied by lawyer Sabbir Hamza Choudhury appeared for Mamun while Advocate Ashif Hassan stood for the ACC during hearing of the appeal.
