In a recent interview with international news outlet Al Jazeera, Dr. Yunus shared this information. The interview aired on Sunday (April 27) as part of Al Jazeera’s global leadership program "Talk to Al Jazeera," under the title "Muhammad Yunus: Real Reform or Just a New Ruling Class in Bangladesh?"
During the extensive interview published on Al Jazeera’s website, Dr. Yunus discussed the July Revolution, former autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s flight to India, and corruption under the previous regime, among other critical topics.
In the interview, the host asked the Chief Adviser:
"You have promised to ensure justice for those who were killed or disappeared during Sheikh Hasina’s rule. Will your government invite a UN-led investigation? How will you move the justice process forward?"
In response, Dr. Yunus said, "A UN-led investigation has already been conducted. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has published a comprehensive report detailing everything. We are pleased that we didn’t have to conduct a separate investigation."
He added, "They have invested considerable time documenting the atrocities, and the report is available to the public. This provides a strong foundation for the justice process."
The Chief Adviser further stated, "Besides the UN report, we have our own research and documentation, complete with evidence of the horrific crimes committed."
"Our legal system is now active, enabling us to proceed with the trials. The proceedings are expected to start either at the end of this month or early next month," he confirmed.
Emphasizing accountability, Dr. Yunus said, "No one involved in crimes against humanity will be spared."
During the interview, he also expressed a firm commitment to delivering a free, fair, and historic election in Bangladesh between December this year and June next year.
He stated, "If the list of reforms is short, elections will be held by December. If the list is extensive, elections will take place by June of next year."
