Nahid, during a press conference in front of the State Guest House Jamuna, after submitting his resignation to Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, said he wants to work with the public rather than in the government.
"I can play a bigger role on the streets than in the government, to consolidate the forces that partook in the mass uprising."
He continued: "I want to work with people, not in the government. What can be done with people is not possible while staying in the government. Besides, I prefer to be on the streets for politics."
"I have submitted my resignation letter and resigned from all committees."
He said that in six months in office, he has performed additional duties outside the responsibilities of his two ministries.
Although six months is a very short time, Nahid said he has tried to do his best, adding that the public will evaluate his work.
In response to questions from reporters, he said he intends to join the new political party being formed by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiya Nagorik Committee.
When asked about who will replace him in the government, Nahid said it is up to the Cabinet.
According to sources in the Chief Adviser's office, he wrote in his resignation letter that in the current context, he believes that he should be present among students and the public for the greater good of the nation.
A meeting began at Jamuna, the residence of the chief adviser, around noon.
At about 2:30pm, Nahid and members of the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing made the resignation announcement at a press conference.
There had been discussions for several days that Nahid would resign and take helm of the new party.
Nahid is supposed to be the convener of the party being launched by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, which will be announced on Friday.
Nahid Islam, a student in the Department of Sociology at Dhaka University, became a well-known face serving as a spokesperson for the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the anti-quota movement of 2024.
Then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 amid the mass uprising led by students in the continuation of that movement.
Three days later, on August 8, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus.
Nahid and another former coordinator of the movement, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, became advisers in that government.
Later, another student leader, Mahfuj Alam, first became a special assistant to the chief adviser and later became an adviser.
Nahid enrolled in the Department of Sociology in the 2016-17 academic year. He is currently a postgraduate student in the department.
