Speaking to journalists on Monday (April 28) after an event celebrating National Legal Aid Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Dr. Nazrul clarified the situation.
"The Election Commission inquired whether Ishraq Hossain’s gazette notification should proceed. As a constitutional body, they are not required to seek our opinion; they are empowered to make their own decisions," he said. "When they did send us a request, we consulted the relevant legal officials. We learned that according to the election plan, changes cannot be made because there is a High Court ruling on this matter."
Dr. Nazrul added, "It was later reported that Ishraq Hossain had modified the election plan, which caused some confusion on our part about whether to issue the gazette notification or to proceed with an appeal. However, the Election Commission did not wait for our opinion and independently issued the gazette notification. Therefore, I have nothing more to comment on this issue."
Meanwhile, addressing a separate question regarding murder cases filed against Iresh Zaker and whether such cases are commercial or politically motivated, Dr. Nazrul explained, "Under Bangladeshi law, there are no restrictions on filing cases. Anyone can initiate legal action. Unfortunately, many of these cases are indeed harassing or driven by personal or commercial vendettas often related to land grabs or business disputes. This is truly regrettable."
He concluded, "While we are trying to provide remedies through the police and judicial systems, the sheer volume of cases is making it increasingly difficult for us to manage."
