The incident occurred between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm, police and witnesses said.
The injured teachers were identified as Md. Shafiqul Islam Kajal (40), Ganapati Howlader (32), and Akkas Ali (55). All three were later taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
Injured teacher Ganapati Howlader told reporters that the demonstrators were peacefully protesting to press for several demands, including: A 20 percent house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff, A Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and A 75 percent festival allowance for employees.
“We were staging our protest peacefully when police stopped us. Suddenly, they threw sound grenades and started lathicharging us. Several teachers were injured. I and two others were taken to DMCH for emergency treatment,” said Howlader.
He added that he hails from Pirojpur, while Shafiqul Islam Kajal is from Katiadi in Kishoreganj, and Akkas Ali is from Chandpur. “We have visible injury marks on our heads, legs, and other parts of our bodies,” he said.
Confirming the incident, Md. Faruk, Inspector-in-Charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said: “Three injured teachers were brought to the hospital’s emergency department from the Press Club area. They received first aid and left after treatment.”
The protest, organized under the banner of MPO Shikhak-Karmachari Oikya Parishad, demanded immediate government action to fulfill their long-standing demands for better benefits and recognition.
