If convicted, Tulip Siddiq—who previously served as the UK’s City Minister—could face a 10-year prison sentence under Bangladeshi law.

Allegations Linked to Plot Allocation

According to the case documents, 43-year-old Tulip Siddiq is accused of securing Purbachal plots for her mother, brother, and sister through the influence of Sheikh Hasina.

British newspaper The Daily Mail earlier reported that Tulip was investigated for allegedly embezzling £4 billion from the Rooppur nuclear power plant project. The controversy forced her to resign from her ministerial post.

Possible Political Fallout in the UK

UK media reported on Sunday that if Tulip is convicted in Bangladesh and handed a long prison term, she could face renewed pressure to step down as a Member of Parliament.

She previously faced intense political pressure in December after corruption allegations related to the Rooppur project surfaced. Although she resigned from the ministry at the time, she continued to serve as MP for Hampstead and Highgate.

Controversy Over London Flat

Amid the Rooppur allegations, questions also arose over a flat Tulip owns in the UK. She initially claimed the flat was gifted by her parents, but later reports alleged it was given to her by a pro–Awami League leader as a bribe.

However, an internal UK government inquiry later concluded that Tulip had not violated ministerial rules in relation to the flat.

British Lawyers Raise Concerns Over Trial in Bangladesh

Several British lawyers have expressed concern about the transparency of the case proceedings in Bangladesh. They have written to the Bangladesh High Commission seeking clarification.

According to The Daily Mail, Tulip Siddiq has not commented on the case or the lawyers' letter.
