NDTV reported that the explosion, which took place inside a vehicle near the Red Fort, left at least eight people dead and 11 others injured. The impact of the blast caused three to four nearby vehicles to catch fire, leaving them severely damaged.
Delhi Police confirmed the explosion, describing it as “very powerful.” Emergency services immediately rushed to the scene, rescuing the injured and transporting them to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, where doctors pronounced eight victims dead.
Footage from the site showed extensive damage — a van’s door blown off, a car completely destroyed, and several windshields shattered.
The New Delhi Fire Service reported that at least 20 firefighting units were deployed to control the blaze following reports of the explosion near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. Police have cordoned off the entire area and suspended traffic to ensure safety.
A local eyewitness said, “I saw a huge ball of fire from the roof of my house. A terrible explosion followed. The blast was so strong that the windows of nearby buildings shook.” Another witness added, “I was inside a gurdwara when I heard a deafening noise. The sound was so intense that I couldn’t immediately tell what had happened.”
Large Quantity of Explosives Recovered in Faridabad
In a related development, on the same day as the Delhi blast, security forces in Haryana recovered a large quantity of explosives from a rented house in Faridabad. The house was occupied by Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, a resident of Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, who was recently arrested as a key member of a suspected terrorist network.
The discovery was made during a joint operation by the Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir police along with national intelligence agencies. Officials reported seizing over 2,900 kilograms of bomb-making materials during the 15-day-long operation, which successfully dismantled the network.
Authorities have launched a high-level investigation into both incidents to determine possible connections between the Delhi explosion and the Faridabad explosives recovery.
