The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday (October 26) near the City University campus in Birulia, leaving widespread damage to property. Witnesses reported scenes of fire and destruction — broken glass, charred vehicles, and scattered debris littered the streets outside the campus.
At least three buses, five microbuses, and a private car were set on fire, while several other vehicles were vandalized. Parts of the City University academic building were also damaged, with shattered windows, broken furniture, and scattered documents visible on multiple floors.
According to students and eyewitnesses, the conflict began on Sunday evening when some City University students were sitting near Bachelor Paradise Hostel, a house rented by Daffodil University students. During that time, a City University student reportedly spat accidentally, hitting a Daffodil student passing by on a motorcycle. The incident sparked an argument between the two groups.
Around 9 p.m., nearly 50 City University students allegedly attacked the hostel with bricks and homemade weapons, vandalizing the property. A video of the attack quickly went viral on social media, prompting hundreds of Daffodil students to rush to the scene.
Soon after, the Daffodil students marched toward City University, leading to brick-throwing, chases, and counter-chases between the two groups. Members of Daffodil’s proctorial team arrived and contacted City University authorities, urging them to help de-escalate the situation.
However, tensions escalated again when a Daffodil student was beaten near the City University campus. In retaliation, Daffodil students entered the City University grounds, where they allegedly set several vehicles on fire and vandalized buildings and other property.
Md. Arifuzzaman, an associate professor at City University’s Department of Textile Engineering, told the media, “They [Daffodil students] came and destroyed the entire campus by setting fires. Hundreds of our students were injured, and we didn’t get any help from law enforcement. It was a planned attack.”
On the other hand, Daffodil University Proctor Sheikh Muhammad Aliar claimed that nine Daffodil students were still being held at City University. “About 150 of our students were injured in this incident. We’re working to resolve the matter peacefully,” he said.
Md. Arafatul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) for Dhaka District, confirmed the clash. “There was a fight between students, and police were deployed immediately. The situation is now under control, though the atmosphere remains tense,” he said.
Law enforcement personnel continue to patrol the area to prevent further violence, while both universities have opened discussions to defuse the situation and ensure student safety.
