The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka, at 12:30 PM on Monday. The event was moderated by Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Assistant Secretary General and Head of the party’s Central Publicity and Media Division. Nayeb-e-Ameer and former Member of Parliament Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher delivered the keynote address and responded to questions from the press.
In his speech, Dr. Taher said, "We are addressing the nation at a critical juncture. Bangladesh is navigating a serious political crisis. Following the successful mass uprising in July-August 2024, the autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina collapsed. She resigned and fled the country, leading to the breakdown of the administrative structure and a constitutional vacuum."
He noted that many constitutional provisions had become ineffective, prompting the formation of an interim government based on national consensus and the people’s will grounded in Article 7 of the Constitution, which asserts that all power belongs to the people.
Dr. Taher further highlighted that years of authoritarianism, suppression of dissent, widespread corruption, and institutional politicization had rendered the state ineffective. As a result, comprehensive reforms were necessary across all branches of the government.
He explained that following the formation of the interim government, several reform commissions were established. Based on their recommendations, the National Consensus Commission held discussions with political parties on 166 proposals. While 84 of those were eventually adopted, disagreements among a few parties prevented some key decisions from being finalized.
He emphasized that the government has since prepared the July National Declaration and the July National Charter. Jamaat-e-Islami, as a major political party, submitted amendments and recommendations to strengthen the legal foundation of the Charter. Citing historical precedents under the "Doctrine of Necessity," Jamaat called for legal recognition of the Charter to honor the sacrifices of the people during the uprising.
Dr. Taher stated that a roadmap for the upcoming parliamentary elections has already been established. He urged authorities to ensure free, fair, neutral, and peaceful elections, and reiterated Jamaat's longstanding demand for the adoption of a Proportional Representation (PR) system. He argued that such a system would help curb the influence of black money, vote rigging, and muscle power, while ensuring quality representation in parliament.
He added that the demand for PR-based elections is supported by most political parties, as well as a wide range of professionals including academics, journalists, writers, and researchers.
At the press conference, Jamaat-e-Islami presented its five-point public demand:
Hold the national election in February 2026 based on the July National Charter
Implement the Proportional Representation (PR) system in both houses for the upcoming national election
Ensure a level playing field for all political parties to facilitate a fair and acceptable election
Ensure visible justice for atrocities, mass killings, and corruption under the previous regime
Ban the activities of autocratic allies—Jatiya Party and the 14-Party Alliance
To implement these demands, the party announced the following protest programs:
September 18: Rally and protest march in Dhaka
September 19: Protest marches in all divisional cities
September 26: Protest marches across all districts and upazilas
Jamaat-e-Islami called upon the people of Bangladesh to unite and participate in the movement to realize these national demands.
Prominent leaders present at the event included Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar; Assistant Secretary Generals Dr. A.H.M. Hamidur Rahman Azad, Maulana Abdul Halim, and Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal; Central Executive Council members Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, Abdur Rob, and Mobarak Homain; Dhaka North Nayeb-e-Ameer Abdur Rahman Musa; Dhaka South Secretary Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud; Dhaka North Assistant Secretary Yasin Arafat; and Publicity and Media Secretary Ataur Rahman Sarkar, among others.
