Shafiqul Alam made the remarks in a Facebook status posted on his verified account on Friday (November 28).

In the post, he wrote that Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and other Awami League leaders accused in the events of July will eventually have to face the courts of Bangladesh. He added that India has already begun examining the extradition request for the former prime minister.

He further claimed that despite Hasina’s strong base of supporters abroad, signs are emerging that Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal—referred to as the “Butcher of Dhaka” in the post—may soon be extradited to Bangladesh to stand trial. As investigations into alleged crimes during Hasina’s nearly 16-year tenure continue, Kamal’s involvement in incidents of genocide and enforced disappearances is likely to come under increasing scrutiny from international media, he wrote.

“No matter how much money Kamal or other Awami League leaders spend, it will not be possible to escape accountability,” Shafiqul Alam stated. He noted that if the nation remains steadfast in seeking justice for the victims of the July massacre and for human rights violations allegedly committed under the previous government, it will become increasingly difficult for those responsible to avoid legal consequences.

“It will start with Kamal, then one by one…,” he added in the concluding line of his Facebook status.
