The deceased has been identified as Shanto, 24, son of Shipon Ali of Mohammadpur Dangyerpara village in Ramkrishnapur Union under Daulatpur Upazila.
BGB sources said the incident occurred around 2:00 am on December 5 near border pillar 154/3-S, within the jurisdiction of Ashrayan Border Outpost (BOP) in Ramkrishnapur Union. At the time, shots were reportedly fired from the Udaynagar camp of the 146 Battalion of the BSF, during which Shanto was shot. Local residents said they heard at least three gunshots.
According to the BGB, Shanto was taken into custody by the BSF in a critically injured condition and later handed over to Hogalbari Police Station in Murshidabad district of India. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he later died.
Confirming the incident, BGB Assistant Director Zakirul Islam said the force is taking necessary steps to investigate the matter.
“On the night of the incident, BSF opened fire on Shanto and several others near the border. Shanto was injured by gunfire and taken into BSF custody, where he later died while undergoing treatment,” he said.
Zakirul Islam added that a flag meeting between the BGB and the BSF was held on December 8. “The BSF has informed us that Shanto’s body will be handed over through a flag meeting on December 14. After completing the legal formalities, the body will be handed over to his family,” he said.
