He made the remarks while addressing the nation on Monday (January 19) evening.

In his address, Professor Yunus described the July Uprising as a significant milestone in the country’s history. “The July Uprising is a remarkable achievement in the history of the nation. It has unexpectedly created an opportunity to establish democracy, justice and human rights in national life. To realize this goal, we have undertaken a number of reforms,” he said.

The Chief Advisor said the government has prepared the July Charter based on a consensus among all political parties to bring about deeper and more comprehensive reforms. “Your consent is necessary to implement the July Charter. For this reason, a referendum has been arranged. I urge everyone to participate in the referendum and give your consent to the charter,” he added.

Referring to the timing of the vote, Professor Yunus said the referendum would be held alongside the national parliamentary elections on February 12. “If the ‘Yes’ vote wins in the referendum, Bangladesh will be freed from discrimination, exploitation and oppression,” he said.
