Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Wednesday (December 24) afternoon.
Zubair said that following the announcement of the election schedule, Jamaat, under the directive of its Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, removed posters and banners across the country within 48 hours. However, he alleged that violations of the code of conduct are continuing in various areas by other parties.
“Alongside physical banners, the code of conduct is also being violated on digital and virtual platforms,” he said, adding that Jamaat has requested the EC to remove such materials immediately and ensure a level playing field.
The Jamaat leader also strongly demanded the installation of CCTV cameras at polling stations, saying that this would help prevent terrorists and unscrupulous groups from disrupting the election process. He stressed the importance of ensuring a fearless environment for voters. According to him, the Election Commission has assured the party of taking positive steps in this regard.
Referring to recent incidents involving July Movement activists, popular youth leaders, and a murder in Khulna, Zubair said these events have created fear and psychological distress among the public. He said Jamaat has demanded the recovery of illegal weapons and the arrest of identified criminals.
He also raised concerns over what he described as discriminatory VVIP security arrangements during the election campaigns of Jamaat’s top leaders, calling for equal treatment. Additionally, he alleged that promises by a major political party to distribute crores of cards and cash constitute a clear violation of the election code of conduct, urging the EC to take immediate action.
Zubair further alleged that the registration process for expatriate Bangladeshi voters is progressing slowly. He said although nearly 1.25 crore expatriates are eligible, only about six lakh have been registered so far, and called for expediting the process.
Regarding Jamaat’s scheduled public meeting on January 3, the delegation said the programme will be held in compliance with the election code of conduct. Zubair said the rally aims to raise public awareness and that the Returning Officer has already been informed.
