Six-time MP and BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was executed for crimes against humanity in November 2015. The then Sheikh Hasina government executed him after a controversial trial.
Meanwhile, the International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising. At the same time, former IGP Abdullah Al Manun was sentenced to five years in prison for being a royal witness.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, announced the verdict. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
In the verdict, the court said that three charges against Sheikh Hasina were proven. Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death on two charges and life imprisonment on one. On the other hand, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was sentenced to death on one charge. And former IGP Abdullah Al Manun was sentenced to five years in prison for being a witness in the case.
The charges brought against Sheikh Hasina and the three accused in the case are:
Allegations of making provocative statements, giving orders to 'kill and eliminate' protesters by using helicopters, drones and lethal weapons, incitement, incitement, conspiracy, aiding and abetting in the murder of Abu Said, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. Allegations of shooting dead six people by law enforcement in the Chankharpul area of the capital on August 5, 2024. Allegations of burning to death a total of six people, including one alive, in Ashulia.
In addition, the International Crimes Tribunal has ordered the confiscation of all properties in the country belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, who were sentenced to death in a crime against humanity case, and their ownership by the state.
