The ultimatum was announced after a rally held at Shahbagh in the capital on Saturday (December 20) afternoon, following Hadi’s burial. Speakers at the gathering also warned of tougher protest programmes involving students and the general public if a fair investigation is not ensured and the perpetrators are not arrested promptly.

Addressing the rally, speakers said the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi was not an isolated incident but a reflection of the serious deterioration of law and order in the country. They demanded that Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury resign within 24 hours. Failure to comply, they said, would result in more stringent programmes in coordination with students and citizens.

Earlier in the afternoon, Sharif Osman Hadi was laid to rest beside the tomb of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, adjacent to the Central Jama Mosque of Dhaka University, at around 3:30 pm.

National Citizens Party (NCP) Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, leaders from various levels of DUCSU, and members of Hadi’s family were present during the burial.

Hadi’s funeral prayer was held earlier at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building at 2:30 pm. His elder brother, Abu Bakr Siddique, led the namaz-e-janaza in the presence of a large gathering of mourners.
