The two students initially labeled as Shibir members were Tanvir Rahman Moon and Abdullah Al Sayeed. The claim originated from an anonymous Facebook page named “JU Media Cell”, reportedly linked to Chhatra Dal activists, which published their photos and screenshots from Abdullah Al Sayeed’s Facebook profile.
The shared screenshots included posts about an Islamic song by DUCSU VP Sadiq Qaim, a photo of an iftar mahfil, and a campaign post supporting JACSU VP candidate Arif Ullah. However, none of these posts contained any content or images linking them directly to Islami Chhatra Shibir.
After the post was circulated by several Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, it quickly sparked widespread discussion and criticism on social media, though no concrete evidence supported the Shibir affiliation claims.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah Al Sayeed denied any political ties, saying, “I have never been involved with any political organization. Shibir’s VP candidate Arif Ullah Bhai is from my district, and during the JACSU elections, he requested us to share his campaign post. I shared it only for that reason. Unfortunately, a screenshot of it is now being used to label me as a Shibir member.”
He added, “During Ramadan, I attended iftar events organized by various student groups, including Chhatra Dal, Shibir, and others. A picture from one of those events is being misused against me. My family and I are devastated by this false propaganda.”
Mostafizur Rahman, branch secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, also rejected the allegations, calling them “false and politically motivated.”
He said, “An organized campaign is being carried out to link the ragging incident with Shibir. During our last Ramadan iftar, around 3,000 students from various organizations attended. Some people are now using photos from that event to claim Shibir affiliation, which is completely baseless.”
Echoing the same view, Mazharul Islam, General Secretary of Jaksur and the branch office secretary, confirmed, “None of the accused are connected with Islami Chhatra Shibir. After learning about the incident, we immediately contacted the hall provost, proctor, and university administration, urging a fair investigation and punishment. The administration acted promptly. However, certain vested quarters are now trying to spread confusion by branding the accused as Shibir activists — which is entirely untrue.”
He further appealed to the university community to stay away from rumors, saying, “We must work together to eliminate this toxic culture of ragging from our campuses. The administration must also be stricter in enforcing discipline.”
Interviews with several classmates and department students also confirmed that the accused individuals were never seen participating in any Shibir-related activities or programs.
According to university sources, the incident took place on the night of October 12, when a group of second-year students allegedly mentally tortured first-year students of the same department. Acting on the complaint, the JU administration temporarily expelled 16 students the following day (October 13) after a preliminary investigation and formed a three-member inquiry committee. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within 21 working days.
The expelled students are: Tanvir Rahman Moon, Abdullah Al Sayeed, Abdullah Al Fahad, Abu Talha Roni, Rajib Sheikh, SM Mahmudunnabi, Abu Sayeed, Jannatul Adan, Ahmed Arefin Ratul, Tasnimul Hasan Zubayer, Mahmudul Hasan Fuad, Al Hasib, Abdullah Al Noman, Rakibul Hasan Nib, Zahidul Islam, and Ushant Tripura. All are residential students of Hall No. 21 and belong to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
