The announcement was made by Plabon Tarek, an organizer of July Unity, at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen on the Dhaka University campus on Monday (January 12) afternoon.
Plabon Tarek said that on January 13 at 12:00 noon, July Unity will hold a march to the Election Commission (EC) and submit a memorandum outlining their demands. He added that similar marches and memorandums will be submitted to divisional Election Commission offices in divisional cities across the country on January 14.
Speaking at the press conference, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Literature and Cultural Secretary Mosaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad said that after more than two decades, the country is expecting a fair and acceptable national election. He noted that although the election schedule has been announced and the processes of nomination submission, scrutiny, and withdrawal are underway, it is unfortunate that allegations of flaws and irregularities are still being raised at such a crucial stage.
Mosaddiq Ali alleged that despite repeated demands to take action against political forces involved in and supportive of the July genocide, as well as those who helped sustain what he described as a fascist regime over the past 15 to 16 years, no effective measures have been taken. He claimed that although the activities of the Awami League were banned in May, its registration has only been suspended rather than cancelled. He also alleged that the Election Commission has yet to take a clear stance on the Jatiya Party and the 14 parties, which he described as allies of the Awami League.
He further said that allowing the Jatiya Party and its allied forces—whom he accused of involvement in the July and Shapla Chattar killings—to participate in the election would be tantamount to betraying the blood of the martyrs. He also demanded voting rights for citizens who, according to him, were deprived of voting in the 2014 and 2024 elections.
DUCSU Social Services Secretary AB Zubair also addressed the press conference, demanding justice for the murder of Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadir. He alleged that the Jatiya Party and 14 other parties had cooperated in sustaining the Awami League during its prolonged rule and said that strict action should have been taken against these allied organizations from the outset.
Zubair further said that a writ petition has recently been filed with the High Court seeking to prevent the Awami League and its affiliated organizations from being rehabilitated through elections. He noted that the High Court has issued a rule in this regard and expressed hope that justice would be ensured through the judicial process.
Israfil Farazi and Munshi Burhan Mahmud were also present at the press conference.
