The party’s Deputy Ameer, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, made the remarks in an immediate reaction to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s address to the nation on Thursday (November 13).
Taher said, “Further clarification is needed on some issues in the Chief Adviser’s speech. We will review it ourselves and then decide on our next course of action.”
He also observed that holding a referendum on the same day as the national election would undermine its importance and significance.
Meanwhile, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar expressed disappointment over the Chief Adviser’s announcement, saying, “Ignoring the public demands and aspirations, the national election and referendum have been announced on the same day. The people’s expectations were not reflected in the Chief Adviser’s speech.”
He raised concerns about the logistical and procedural challenges of holding both votes simultaneously, adding, “If the referendum and national election are held on the same day and ballot voting is halted due to any disturbance, what will happen to the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ votes in the referendum? The speech did not clarify how these issues will be addressed.”
Speaking at an impromptu press conference at the party’s central office, Golam Parwar added, “Jamaat-e-Islami had expected a solution to the ongoing political crisis through this announcement. But that crisis still remains.”
He also confirmed that the sit-in program organized by eight political parties in front of the Chief Adviser’s Office on November 16 will continue as planned.
Earlier, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in his televised address to the nation, announced that a referendum on the July National Charter would be held on election day, where voters would respond with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a single question covering four key reform issues.
