Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain confirmed the development while speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (November 23) evening. He stated that the letter was sent from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Friday.
According to Touhid Hossain, the request follows the recent verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). On November 17, the tribunal sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, finding them guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the July Movement.
Sheikh Hasina’s government collapsed on August 5 last year, after which she sought refuge in India. The interim government had previously sent a letter seeking her return under the existing extradition treaty, but no response was received.
Following the ICT's latest verdict, another formal request was issued on Friday, urging India to return Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to Bangladesh to face the legal process.
