“We are deeply concerned about the Election Commission. The process of its formation and its current conduct are not neutral or transparent. The EC is not functioning as per the constitutional mandate. It seems to be showing favoritism toward some while acting like a stepmother toward others,” said Nahid Islam.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus in front of the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday (October 22) evening.
The NCP convener said that his party had demanded a roadmap for the trial of the July murders before the next election. “We have asked about the progress of the cases, how long the process will take, and through what mechanism it will be completed,” he said.
Regarding the July Charter, Nahid Islam stated, “We have presented our position to the government and made it clear that we will sign the July Charter only after being assured of its proper implementation.”
He further mentioned that Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus would issue a constitutional order to implement the July Charter. “This responsibility lies with the Chief Adviser. It will not be carried out by President Shahabuddin Chuppu,” he added.
Reiterating his criticism of the Election Commission, Nahid said, “The EC’s current activities show clear bias. It needs to be restructured to ensure neutrality and transparency.”
He also informed that the NCP had raised concerns about public administration and the advisory council, adding, “We wanted to know on what basis the administrative transfers are being made.”
