The ultimatum was announced in a statement signed by Association President Md. Amirul Islam and Secretary General Muhammad Mazharul Islam on Friday (November 14).
The second demand calls for strict action against the police officers accused of negligence in ensuring the safety of a judge during the recent Rajshahi incident, as well as those responsible for unprofessional conduct by illegally presenting the arrested suspect before the media.
The association stated that judges will launch a simultaneous strike nationwide if a secure working environment and comprehensive safety measures for members of the judiciary are not ensured within the stipulated 48 hours.
The warning follows the tragic killing of District Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman’s 17-year-old son, Tausif Rahman, who was stabbed to death at their Rajshahi residence on Thursday. His mother, Tasmin Nahar, was seriously injured in the attack. The Judicial Service Association expressed deep shock and outrage over the incident.
In the statement, the judges noted that the Supreme Court has repeatedly requested the government to ensure security in all court premises, including tribunals, courtrooms, judges’ residences and vehicles. However, no visible steps have been taken so far.
The association further highlighted that judicial officers perform some of the most critical and high-risk duties of the state, yet they and their families remain vulnerable. It also pointed out that many district-level judges do not have government-provided housing or transport facilities. Judges serving in chowki courts are often forced to live in rented houses, travel by rickshaws or vans, and in some cases even walk.
The statement added that all judges across the country will wear black badges at their workplaces on Sunday as a mark of protest.
According to police sources, ninth-grade student Tausif was murdered on Thursday afternoon at their rented home in Rajshahi's Dabtala area. The attacker, Limon Mia (35), an acquaintance of the family, also injured Tausif’s mother. Both Limon and Tasmin are currently receiving treatment, with the attacker under police custody. As of 11 am today, no case has yet been filed in connection with the incident.
