Independent candidate in the Shaksu election, Mominur Rashid Shuvo, filed the writ petition with the concerned branch of the High Court on Sunday (January 18). Relevant sources confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post.
The Chief Election Commissioner and other concerned parties have been made respondents in the writ petition.
The writ petition states that the Election Commission has issued instructions to suspend all elections before the National Assembly elections. In this situation, it is not legal to allow the Shaksu elections to be held. The Shaksu elections are scheduled to be held on January 20.
Meanwhile, the campaigning time for candidates in the Central Student Union (SHAKSU) and Hall Parliament elections of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet has been extended by 12 hours.
This information was given in a notification signed by Shaksur Chief Election Commissioner Abul Mukit Mohammad Mokaddes at around 10:15 am on Sunday.
The notification said that the campaigning of candidates participating in the Shaksu election was disrupted after the Bangladesh Election Commission ordered a moratorium on all elections in the country on January 12. Later, on January 15, the Election Commission allowed the Shaksu election to be held on January 20, 2026. To facilitate the campaigning of candidates, the last date for campaigning for the Shaksu election has been extended to January 18, 9 pm.
According to the election code of conduct, the campaign period is supposed to end 48 hours before the polling. Accordingly, the campaign period ended at 10 pm on Saturday. However, the time has been extended in view of the application of some candidates for an extension. Candidates will have the opportunity to campaign until 9 pm today, Sunday. Voting for the election will be held from 9 am on January 20.
