He said the Election Commission has cancelled the Awami League’s registration, making the party ineligible to contest the next election. “The government’s position on this issue is very clear,” he added.
Shafiqul Alam made the remarks at a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium in the capital on Wednesday (December 24) afternoon.
Addressing the recent killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, the press secretary said the government strongly condemns the incident. “At least 12 people involved in the murder have already been arrested after reviewing video footage and visuals,” he said. He added that the legal advisor has confirmed the case will be tried under the Speedy Trial Act.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting minorities, Shafiqul Alam said adequate security measures were ensured during Durga Puja and other major religious festivals across the country.
Regarding the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the press secretary said the government welcomes his return to Bangladesh. “His party is in discussions with us regarding security arrangements. We are monitoring the situation and providing whatever cooperation the BNP has requested,” he said.
He further informed that 31 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents involving The Daily Star and Prothom Alo. “Each arrest was made based on video footage and visual evidence, and evidence has been found against many of the detainees,” he added.
