The fatal accident took place around 2:30 p.m. in front of Islamia Alia Madrasa on the Kabirhat–Basurhat road, according to police sources.

The deceased were identified as Shah Alam Khokon (the auto-rickshaw driver), Tanim Hasan (a student of Noakhali College), and students Israt Jahan, Bibi Kulsum, Jannat, and Sultan Ahmed Sumon.

Local resident Tipu Sultan told the accident occurred when a speeding truck, traveling from Maijdi toward Basurhat, hit the auto-rickshaw head-on. The impact left the vehicle completely mangled. Members of the fire service and police rushed to the spot shortly after the incident.

Kabirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahin Mia said three people died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries at Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex, and two others died after being taken to Maijdi Hospital — bringing the total death toll to six.

“The two vehicles involved have been seized and brought to the police station. However, the truck driver managed to flee after the collision. Legal action is being taken in connection with the incident,” the OC added.

Police said the bodies have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, and preparations are underway to file a case over the fatal road crash.
