The clash erupted around 2:10 pm, when the teachers, who had gathered in front of the National Press Club, began marching toward the Secretariat as part of their scheduled program. Police reportedly attempted to stop the procession, leading to a confrontation.
Md. Faruk, Inspector-in-Charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Camp, confirmed the incident, saying, “At least 50 people were injured in the clash between police and Ebtedayi madrasa teachers. The injured were rescued and taken to the emergency department of DMCH for treatment.”
He added that many of the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital, while others were released after receiving first aid.
Eyewitnesses said the teachers had been demonstrating peacefully for the nationalization of their educational institutions before the clash broke out. Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the protesters, while teachers threw bamboo sticks and banners in retaliation.
The protest was part of an ongoing movement by Ebtedayi Madrasa teachers, who have been demanding that the government recognize their schools under the national education framework to ensure job security and equal pay.
Police have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the clash or whether any arrests were made.
