Time Digital News: The newly appointed commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Khandker Golam Faruq, on Monday said that police would not bar the programmes of any political party as long as those were not violent.

Faruq said that the police force will not interfere into activities of any political parties, except the banned ones.

The new DMP chief made the remarks while responding to journalists’ queries during his first media briefing at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka.

‘But if there is any criminal offence during any political programme, police will handle them strictly,’ Faruq added saying ‘police don’t have any options to take actions if there is no criminal offence in any political programme.’

The DMP chief said that police stations were the first and prime points for people to ask for police supports.

But, he said, there were some allegations of harassments while entering police stations seeking services.

He said that CCTV cameras would be installed in front of duty officers, munshis (clerks) and sentries to monitor the situation and stop harassments.

The DMP commissioner said that he instructed officers-in-charge in all the police stations to visit all the mosques in their jurisdictions, offer prayers there and then address people saying that they would need no money or giving bribe to policemen for getting services from the police stations.

‘If the OCs have any sort of feelings of shame, they will not ask for money from people any more,’ Faruq said.

The government on October 23 appointed additional inspector general of police Khandker Golam Faruq as the 35th commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and he took the charge six days later.
