Time Digital Report: Visiting US congressmen today said the United States wants to see an election in Bangladesh that the world will regard as free and fair.

The Congressmen -- Republican Rich McCormick and Democrat Ed Case -- said this while holding a meeting with the representatives of Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party at the residence of US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas.

"Of the two congressmen, the senior one [Case] clearly told us that they want to see such an election which will be held in a neutral and democratic manner and the world will regard that as free and fair," JP MP Rana Mohammad Sohel told The Daily Star after the meeting.

Rana Mohammad Sohel was part of a three-member delegation of JP present at the meeting. The two other members were JP MPs Sherifa Quader and Nazma Akhtar.

Asked, Sohel said the two US congressmen didn't say anything about BNP and other opposition parties' demand for holding the upcoming election under a caretaker government dissolving the parliament before the polls.

The JP MP said the US congressmen wanted to know about the political goals of AL and BNP.

"Both AL and BNP couldn't say anything concrete or clearly on this matter. They just replied what they have done and what they will not do," added the JP MP without explaining.

Peter Haas was also present at the meeting.

Congressman McCormick is representing the Republican Party from Georgia, and Case from the Democratic Party, Hawaii.

While in Dhaka, the congressmen will meet government officials and civil society members to discuss the importance of free and fair elections, and issues of mutual interest to strengthen bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States.
