Time Digital Report: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today cleared the way for President Mohammad Shahabuddin to continue as the head of the state.
An eight-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by SC lawyer MA Aziz Khan seeking its order to declare the post of president vacant and to hold a fresh election for the post.
The apex court also imposed a cost of Tk 1 lakh to petitioner MA Aziz Khan, for moving such a petition before this court.
Details of the SC order could not be known as its full text was not released yet.
Contacted MA Aziz Khan told this correspondent that he does not know why the Appellate Division has imposed the cost of Tk 1 lakh.
He said he would take the next course of action after receiving the full text of the SC order.
Aziz Khan recently submitted the leave to appeal petition to the SC as its chamber judge on March 21 upheld a High Court order that on March 15 rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of the process of electing Shahabuddin as president.
Veteran freedom fighter and politician Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24 as the tenure of outgoing president Abdul Hamid expired on that day.
