Time Digital Report: Law Minister Anisul Huq today said that even though there is no bar against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia engaging in politics, people think that she practically cannot do so as she is sick.

She cannot take part in the election as she is convicted, he said, adding that there is no condition disallowing her to be involved in politics.

"You will have to understand what the real situation is. It has been stated in the application submitted by her brother for her release from jail that she [Khaleda] is seriously ill and her life will be jeopardized if she is not given better treatment," the minister said.

"Then, the prime minister released her from jail by suspending her jail sentence on humanitarian grounds. I have told you time and again at that time to consider whether a sick person can do politics. General people consider that a sick person cannot engage in politics. That is the actual situation," he said.

The minister was replying to queries from newsmen after attending as chief guest at a seminar on "Rohingya Crisis and Security Challenges: Strategies of Bangladesh" in the auditorium of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka.

The law minister said the allegation from the BNP that the government wants to bring Khaleda into politics to keep Tarique Rahman away and to interfere in the BNP is completely false.
