After undergoing treatment for nearly a week at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Evercare Hospital, and later at a hospital in Singapore, Hadi died at 9:45 pm (Bangladesh time) on Thursday, December 18.

His body was brought back to Bangladesh on Friday evening (December 19). Following an autopsy on Saturday morning (December 20), the body was taken to the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban area, where his funeral was held. Lakhs of people, including senior state officials and political leaders, attended the funeral, drawing significant attention from international media.

Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera published images of the huge crowd and reported that the funeral and burial of Osman Hadi, described as a leader of the 2024 student-led movement, had been completed. The report also noted that a state mourning was being observed in Bangladesh in his memory and highlighted the extensive security arrangements around the funeral.

Global news agency Reuters reported that hundreds of thousands of people, including Bangladesh’s interim prime minister Professor Muhammad Yunus, attended the funeral of the slain youth leader. Reuters also mentioned that Hadi would be buried next to the tomb of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in recognition of his role in the country’s recent history.

Pakistan’s leading daily Dawn ran the headline: “Last rites of slain youth leader held in Bangladesh amid tight security under state management.”

India’s Times of India provided live updates on Hadi’s funeral and burial ceremonies, carrying the headline: “You will never be lost” – Professor Yunus at Hadi’s funeral. The report emphasized the large turnout of mourners.

Another Indian media outlet, NDTV, headlined its report: “His blood will not go in vain,” say millions who attended Hadi’s funeral.

Several other international media outlets, including TRT World and Geo News, also carried reports highlighting the extraordinary public response and the deep emotional impact of Hadi’s death across Bangladesh.
