Time News Desk: Jamaat leaders and activists staged a demonstration on Saturday in the capital's Mirpur to protest against the arrests of Dhaka City North Ameer Salim Uddin.

They started a protest rally from the Mirpur-10 intersection and marched to Kazipara Metro Rail Station, demanding the immediate release of the leaders and the withdrawal of remands.

At the rally, Jamaat's central Majlish-e-Sura member and Dhaka Metropolitan North Assistant Secretary Md Mahfuzur Rahman said that Jamaat's Dhaka North Ameer Muhammad Salim Uddin has been arrested as a part of the government crackdown to come into power illegally by holding an election of farce and hypocrisy again.

"The government is destroying the country's democracy and democratic values as part of its conspiracy to prolong its illegal power," he added.

He demanded the cancellation of 5 day- police-remand and the immediate and unconditional release of the arrestees including Mohammad Selim Uddin. Mahfuzur Rahman also protested the granting of 5 day- police-remand of a concocted case. 14 people including Selim Uddin were arrested from a discussion meeting titled ‘on the role of Zakat in the socio-economic development of the country’ and an Iftar Party in the honor of prominent citizens. Bashundhara organizational thana of Jamaat Dhaka City North on Friday (7 April) arranged the Iftar party and discussion meeting. The police filed a case against Selim Uddin under Terrorism Act.

Dr. Fakharuddin Manik, a member of central Mojlish-e-Shura and assistant secretary of Jamaat Dhaka City North, Ziaul Hasan, a member of the working committee of Jamaat Dhaka City North, Jamal Uddin, Ataur Rahman Sarker, and others were also present in the demonstration.

“Jamaat is a pro-people, democratic, constitutional, and legitimate political party. They are running various programs for the socio-economic development of the country. But Jamaat leaders are being arrested and filled concoct cases against them,” Mahfuzur Rahman added.

“The government is destroying democracy and democratic values of the country to prologue their illegitimate power. The government has imprisoned the top leaders including Ameer-e-Jamaat to destroy the leadership of the country. Jamaat leaders are being persecuted, tortured, detained, imprisoned, and murdered. The arrest of Selim Uddin is the continuation of these persecutions,” he again added.

“But the BAKSAL and the fascists will not be able to survive in the future. They have to suffer as they have taken anti-people steps,” he remarked.

Mahfuzur Rahman urged the government to immediately and unconditionally release all top leaders including Ameer-e-Jamaat. Otherwise, the government has to face public anger.
