Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal has said the announcement of the election schedule is imminent, given that the time for the upcoming national polls is drawing near.
Awal was speaking to reporters following a meeting between the election commissioners and secretary and President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Thursday.
The Election Commission sat down with the president to brief him on the commission’s preparations for the announcement of the schedule.
“We have informed him about a possible schedule… At any rate, we have to [hold the election] before the deadline, January 29. We told him that we had not made a decision yet. We met him today, talked and exchanged views. We will discuss among ourselves and determine the possible schedule,” Awal said to journalists.
When asked if the announcement would come before or after November 15, he said the commission had not decided that yet.
“We will announce the schedule soon,” he said, adding that the commission still wanted to hold the election in the first or second week of January.
Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam told journalists on Wednesday that all necessary preparations had been completed, and the election schedule would be officially announced next week.
