In a statement issued on Saturday (January 17), Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and head of the party’s central publicity and media department, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, strongly condemned the incident and called for the immediate identification and prosecution of the attackers.
According to the statement, miscreants carried out a planned attack on Friday night (January 16) on Hasnat Abdullah, a gazetted July uprising hero who was previously injured during the movement in Chandanaish, Chattogram. Another young man, Mainuddin, who was accompanying him at the time, was also attacked. The assailants allegedly used sticks and sharp weapons, leaving both victims seriously injured.
Condemning the incident, Advocate Zubair said the armed attack on individuals who played a role in the movement to establish democracy, justice, and voting rights is a grave cause for concern. He described the attack as not only an assault on a July fighter but also a direct blow to the country’s democratic spirit.
He further said that resorting to violence and terrorism under the guise of political differences is unacceptable. Warning of broader consequences, he added that failure to promptly bring those responsible to justice could seriously undermine the electoral environment and political stability of the country.
Expressing sympathy, the Jamaat leader wished Hasnat Abdullah and Mainuddin a speedy recovery and conveyed condolences to their families. He also urged the government and the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of the gazetted heroes injured during the July uprising.
Advocate Zubair called on the authorities to conduct a fair, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident and to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. He also demanded effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks in the future.
