News Desk: Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal JSD president ASM Abur Rob addresses a press conference to announce the launching of Ganatantra Mancha, a new political alliance comprising seven opposition political parties, at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Monday.
A new political alliance, Ganatantra Mancha, comprising six political parties and a socio-cultural organisation, was announced on Monday at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity with the vow to broaden the movement against the Awami League government to compel it to resign from the power.
The seven constituent members of the alliance are Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, Nagarik Oikya, Gono Odhikar Parishad, Ganosamhati Andolan, Revolutionary.
Workers Party of Bangladesh, Rastra Sanskar Andolan and Bhashani Onusari Parishad.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD president ASM Abur Rob, announcing the alliance, said that the AL government had no moral right to remain in power and it would have to hand over power to an interim government, which would conduct the next general election in a free, fair and credible manner.
Rob called on the alliance leaders and activists to form a council for movement across the country under it.
Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna read out the political declaration of the Ganatantra Mancha.
In the declaration, the new alliance demanded the resignation of the AL regime and the dissolution of the parliament, saying that the government must hand over power to an interim government to be formed on the basis of political consensus.
The interim government would hold a free, fair and credible general election in the country, it added.
The Ganatantra Mancha will work for forging a greater opposition unity that will wage a mass movement to force the government out of power, the declaration said.
Manna announced the first public programme of the alliance for August 11 at 11:00am in Dhaka city to protest against the fuel price hike and the failures of the government.
The venue of the protest would be announced later, said Manna.
Gono Odhikar Parishad convener Reza Kibria said that the people of the country would be in further troubles if the government took fresh loans from the International Monitory Fund.
‘The Awami League government has increased the prices of urea fertiliser and fuel oils to meet IMF conditions for loans,’ said Reza Kibria.
Parishad member-secretary Nurul Haque Nur conducted the press conference.
The six political parties and Bhashani Onusari Parishad that constituted the new alliance were working for the past three months to float it, noted Nur.
The alliance will work for the restoration of voting rights of the people and democracy in the country and also for the formation of a welfare state, he added.
Those who attended the event also included Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki and its executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel, Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh general secretary Saiful Huq, Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu and Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum.
